The Academy
The Liberal Leadership Academy: Europe is an international leadership programme for the next generation of liberal political leaders. Building on more than five years of experience training young liberals through the Liberal Leadership Academy, VVD International and FNF Europe have joined forces to expand the programme and prepare participants for the challenges of today’s European political landscape.
Across Europe, liberal democracy faces growing pressure from populism, political polarization, and shifting societal challenges. In this environment, liberalism cannot be taken for granted. It must be learned, practiced, defended, and continually renewed.
The Academy brings together ambitious young liberals from across Europe to strengthen their leadership skills, deepen their understanding of liberal values, and build lasting international networks. Through interactive training sessions, expert contributions, practical exercises, and exchanges with fellow participants, the programme equips future leaders with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
At the heart of the Academy is a shared belief that strong liberal leadership is essential for the future of Europe. Module I
Module 1: Know Yourself, Know Your Story
In the first module of the Liberal Leadership Academy, participants explore who they are, what motivates them, and how they can use their personal strengths and experiences to build a compelling political narrative.
The module consists of three courses:
1. Lumina
An extensive personality assessment that helps participants better understand themselves and how they interact with others. Developing this self-awareness is an important foundation for anyone aspiring to grow in a political role.
2. Liberalism
This course explores the foundations of liberalism and helps participants understand what it means to be a liberal, why they personally identify with liberal values, and how different traditions and interpretations of liberalism have developed.
3. Narrative Building
The final course focuses on developing a personal political narrative. Participants explore questions such as “Why you?”and “Why now?” to connect their personal experiences, motivations and ambitions to a relevant and authentic political story.
Module II
Module 2: Communicate Your Message
In the second module of the Liberal Leadership Academy, participants build on the self-awareness, political understanding and personal narrative developed in Module 1. The focus now shifts from developing your message to delivering it effectively.
Participants learn how to communicate with impact, connect with different audiences and confidently present their political ideas. The module consists of three courses:
1. Political Communication
This course focuses on communicating effectively as a politician, both online and offline. Participants learn how to turn their political ideas and personal narrative into clear, engaging and effective content, while adapting their message to different audiences and communication channels.
2. Public Speaking
Participants develop the skills and confidence needed to speak effectively in front of an audience. The training focuses on presenting with clarity, confidence and authenticity, while keeping an audience engaged and making a message memorable.
3. Debate
In the final course, participants put their communication skills into practice in a debate setting. They learn how to formulate and defend their arguments, respond to opposing views, think on their feet and remain persuasive under pressure.
Module III
Module 3: Put It Into Practice
The third and final module brings together everything participants have learned throughout the Liberal Leadership Academy. The focus shifts from developing individual skills to putting them into practice in realistic political situations and reflecting on how participants want to develop their political careers.
Module 3 includes an additional day, combining a practical assignment with a political field trip. This gives participants the opportunity to apply their knowledge outside the classroom and gain first-hand insight into how politics works in practice.
The module consists of four key elements:
1. Negotiation & Lobbying
This course introduces participants to the skills needed to build support, find common ground and achieve political results. Participants learn how to negotiate effectively, understand different interests and use lobbying strategically to influence political decision-making.
2. Political Field Trip & Practical Assignment
During the additional day, participants put their knowledge and skills into practice. They work on a practical political assignment and visit relevant political institutions or organisations, giving them a closer look at how political decisions are made and how different actors operate within the political field.
3. Your Future in Politics
As the academy comes to an end, participants take time to reflect on their ambitions and future in politics. With the support of coaches, they revisit the questions “Why me?” and “Why now?” and consider how their personal strengths, values and political ambitions can shape their next steps.
4. Political Simulation: Elections & Coalition Building
The academy culminates in an immersive political simulation. Participants are divided into groups, with each group representing a different political party. They must develop their party strategy, prepare for and run an election campaign, communicate their political message and respond to developments during the campaign.
Once the election is over, the groups enter coalition negotiations. They must negotiate with other parties, identify common ground, make compromises and ultimately work towards forming a governing coalition.
